I was doing some web-surfing, and low and behold, look what I
found! Good luck to the Max Man on making a comeback!

I spent my high school & college years listening to Max's All Night Radio
on CBS-FM. I was in an Armonk, NY deli one Sunday morning and had the pleasure
of meeting him while we were both standing in line - I had never met him, but
recognized the voice! He was heading home after working all night, but talked to
me at length about radio. What a thrill for a 17 year old kid to meet one of his
radio heroes!!! One of the nicest people I ever met.

I would also like to see Max back anywhere in NY!
He is great with Music but if he wants a talk show, that's fine too. JUST NY
BRING HIM BACK!!!!

Although I didn't have the pleasure of hearing Max's overnight show on
CBS-FM, I have heard the air checks on his website as well as air checks from his
days at CKLW. I have to say I liked what I heard and would love to hear him on a
regular basis.

I agree on Max making a comeback. Love or hate him, the fact is HE DID bring
listeners to CBS-FM when he was there, and had one of the most loyal followings
in ALL of New York Radio. Perhaps if and when Don K. Reed retires, maybe it's
time to forget what happened in 1995 and bring "The Max Man" back to
do overnights at 101.1.

I would certainly agree that The Max Man should be back on CBS-FM. And if not
there, he would also fit in great on Q104 or WPLJ. But, come on already, neither
Max Kinkel nor anyone else should be playing 90's music on CBS-FM or on any
other Oldies station. WPLJ, Z100, and LITE-FM all play various Top 40, A/C, and
CHR hits from the 90's. Nobody expects to hear 90's tunes played on CBS-FM.

My favorite CBS-FM Jocks.
1. Dick Heatherton
2. Dan Ingram
3. Max Kinkel
4. Bill Brown
I think Max was a great voice on CBS-FM all Night. His show was a little different. Phone call shtick (especially with women) and a bit more music.
I was surprise and thrilled to hear Max in the office around February, 1987. When many of the jock were sick, Max did PM drive and Joe McCoy did some other show. I actually got to hear Max in the office during the day with the sun out (and no stars out yet!)
I listened to Supermax at CKLW when I would visit my grandparents on the island (of Long) on the mid 1970's. I also taped air checks of him at CKLW. I spoke with Max and he was thrilled to receive copies of my CKLW air checks of him.
I would like Max to be back on CBS-FM overnight again. Those years were the best years for overnight radio on CBS-FM.

I'll bet you thought I said something like "with a face like yours, you
belong on radio", from which Max excerpted "you belong on radio".
In the 70s,I had the pleasure of consulting Max when he was PD of a
Country station, after leaving CKLW. We've been friends ever since. SuperMax has
a real talent for creating content, a skill often not as valued by music
stations today. When I was President/Programming at Westwood One, we had a lot
of former DJs who did talk including Tom Leykis, Don and Mike, and Ron and Fez. Talk radio is a great place for Max, or any personality DJ.
It can be rock and roll radio, without the records.

Holy Smoke: This guy is a good listen with or WITHOUT music. What a contrast,
and what an adaptation. As far as radio goes -- what else does radio offer but
talk and music? -- the fellow is Everyman.
The music show snippets depict an almost out-of-control air p e r s o n a l i
t y, working within the confines of a format. That accomplishment is indeed a
lost art.
And I'm only a sporadic talk-show listener who does tend to stick around
longer than usual to something well-done. But the talk-show segments here are
delightfully like the casual mentations of a Boss Alan Alda; an actual MC and
scene-setter, glib and humorous, rather than the unreasonable and unapproachable
martinet attitude of what I hear too often in radio talk-show hosts.
After listening to the offerings on this page, I can't decide which Kinkel
I'd like to hear more of on the radio!
WABC?
Certainly -- time for a comeback. New York City radio should be ashamed of
itself for having made a 'comeback' necessary in the first place.

Hi Steve,
I have to agree with you 100%, especially after looking at the ratings he pulled on both CKLW & WCBS.
Listening to his CBS air-check made me smile and really brings back a lot of great memories! I can't remember the last time I actually laughed out loud while listening to a live commercial. But hearing Max imitate a dog on a leash sniffing around the city trying to take a leak is an absolute panic!! I'm surprised Pet Land never offered him a position as a company spokes-person!
I never had the chance to catch him live on WEVD. After hearing the air-checks on his site, it was a real treat listening to him doing talk radio. Max has a lot of class, never talked down to any callers and allows people with differing opinions to be heard.
Bottom line: whether music or talk, it would be great to have him back!
Rick
P.S. Great Site! Thanks Max!

Just heard through the grapevine that Max Kinkel will be substituting for
John Gomez (10am-12n) on Friday, January 24, on WLIE (AM540). Should be fun to
listen to.

If CBS-FM wants to stop the bleeding, they should think about re-hiring Max. He would provide the station with some energy! CBS-FM has become a real boring station...a music & personality bore fest.

I remember listening to SuperMax @nite in my bedroom in Bristol CT when he worked "The Big 8" 50,000 watt CKLW-Windsor/Detroit, back in the '70s.
He should have a full-time gig in NY & be syndicated!

With Harry Harrison leaving CBS-FM, replacing him will not be easy. How do
you replace a New York radio legend?
I would like to suggest that Max Kinkel, former CBS-FM overnight personality, be
given the morning show. The Max Man has the energy and personality to be a
strong morning drive host to help bring CBS-FM into a new era wile still
maintaining a bridge to the station's recent past.
Max is available. The question is will PD Joe McCoy reach out to him.

Max deserves it.
He's a great guy.
Infinity should take all of the great jocks of NYC who are currently unemployed & put them on 102.7/WNEW!

Getting rid of Max was probably the first major mistake made by CBS-FM. He had a rare energy for the overnight show, rather than the insomnia-driven Don K. Reed. The changes at that time also resulted in moving Bobby Jay from the Hall of Fame slot, which was also a mistake.

I doubt much, Bob. Max likely has about as much work in voiceovers as Big Dan, which is not going to leave him the time or desire to work mornings.

Bob:
I worked with Max at Jukebox Radio and was right there in the studio when Max
was doing his show. His energy and enthusiasm was quite evident and we all know
it came across the airwaves as well.
When I talked radio with Max, I saw his passion and love of the business. The
trend in radio over the years has been to put "time and temperature"
jocks on the air, or shall I say that is what most PDs want from their jocks.
The result is predictable and bland radio, quite frankly.
CBS-FM has some excellent air talent, The Max Man was part of that
"talent" when he did over-nights.
He did some very entertaining bits to go along with the music he played.
I don't know who Joe McCoy will tab for mornings to replace Harry. But, I think
Max would be an excellent fit. Yes, there are others who would be good as well,
but Max belongs on the radio, and it's a shame that he is not on the air.
I'd like to have a star player sitting on the bench.

Just finished listening to Max Kinkel sitting in for two hours on WLIE
courtesy of the wonderful internet.
My 2c or 2p worth; the guy is a natural for talk radio, kept me interested,
somebody must snap him up now.
Go get 'em, Max !

Max was very animated, and most of all, REAL during his 2 hour show on WLIE today. I listened to it all, and those 2 hours flew by. I also managed not to forget to turn the cassette deck on, so I have the complete air check.
As far as why WCBS-FM let him go...there's no clear answer, other than they wanted to make changes. I doubt Joe McCoy would say anything different.
Max is a living legend in radio, and some station should grab him after today's show...he really showed his chops! Congratulations Max!

Hi Max Kinkel was a great DJ we listened to down here in the New York city area
on WCBS FM 101.1. I was wondering if he will be at the reunion? He now has a

When it was OK
to have an AM radio...
How 'bout CKLW's Super Max Kinkel? A kickass nighttime personality that came along about '76, the beginning of the end for the big AM Top 40's. And for an all-too-brief time in 1970, Walt "Baby" Love, who went on to New York (I believe Super Max went there, too). |
